Sloppy Sams

3 cups water
1 cup lentils, rinsed
salt to taste (optional)
1 cup chopped onion
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 cups chopped tomato
2 cloves garlic, minced

Meanwhile, cook onions with the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until the onions have softened and turned translucent, about 4 minutes. Add tomatoes and garlic, and cook for 5 minutes. Stir in tomato paste, ketchup, mustard powder, chili powder, molasses and Worcestershire sauce; simmer 5 to10 minutes until thickened.
Drain lentils and reserve cooking liquid. Stir lentils into sauce mixture, adding cooking liquid or water as needed to obtain the desired “sloppy joe” consistency. Serve on buns.

What is a Bay Leaf;explain?

Tea Search Questions answers:

I use them to flavor stew and soups. (I like to cook)

The bay tree is indigenous to Asia Minor, from where it spread to the Mediterranean and then to other countries with similar climates. Bay leaf refers to the aromatic leaf of the bay laurel (Laurus nobilis, Lauraceae). The bay leaf is oval, pointed and smooth, 2.5 – 8 cm (1 to 3 in) long. When fresh, the leaves are shiny and dark green on top with lighter undersides. When dried the bay leaf is a matte olive green. Fresh or dried are used in cooking for their distinctive flavor and fragrance. The leaves are often used to flavor soups, stews, braises and pâtés in Mediterranean cuisine. The fresh leaves are very mild and do not develop their full flavor until several weeks after picking and drying.

If eaten whole, are pungent and have a sharp, bitter taste. As with many spices and flavorings, the fragrance of the bay leaf is more noticeable than its taste. When dried, the fragrance is herbal, slightly floral, and somewhat similar to oregano and thyme. Myrcene, which is a component of many essential oils used in perfumery, can be extracted from the bay leaf. also contain the essential oil eugenol.

are never eaten themselves and are really just used to add extra flavour to a number of dishes. can be used in the following ways:
Prepare a bouquet garni and add to soups, stews, casseroles and sauces.
Use in pickling solutions.
Add to boiling water for shrimp, crab and other seafood.
Use in marinades for meat and fish.
Add to milk when preparing homemade rice puddings or other milk puddings.

can also be crushed or ground before cooking. Crushed impart more of their desired fragrance than whole leaves, but are more difficult to remove, and thus they are often used in a muslin bag or tea infuser. Ground bay laurel may be substituted for whole leaves, and does not need to be removed, but it is much stronger due to the increased surface area and in some dishes the texture may not be desirable.

can also be scattered in a pantry to repel meal moths, flies and roaches, owing to the leaf’s lauric acid content that gives it insecticidal properties. have many properties that make them useful for treating high blood sugar, migraine headaches, bacterial and fungal infections, and gastric ulcers. and berries have been used for their astringent, carminative, diaphoretic, digestive, diuretic, emetic and stomachic properties. Bay oil, or oil of bays (oleum lauri) is used in liniments for bruises and sprains. Bay leaf has been used as an herbal remedy for headaches. It contains compounds, called parthenolides, which have proven useful in the treatment of migraines. Bay leaf has also been shown to help the body process insulin more efficiently, which leads to lower blood sugar levels. It has also been used to reduce the effects of stomach ulcers. Bay leaf contains eugenol, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Bay leaf is also an antifungal and antibacterial, and has also been used to treat rheumatism, amenorrhea, and colic.

I brought some bay leaves back from Turkey when I was stationed there in the Air Force. I still have them, so obviously they are not going to be good for cooking. Turkish Bay Leaves are the best in the world. Though not as strong as the California variety, they have a natural depth of flavor that the California Bay Leaves can’t hope to match. Bay leaves grow wild on the hilly mountains of western Turkey in the area around Izmir (Smyrna). The wind there is perfect for growing bay leaves. Most of the year it comes out of the west across the Mediterranean and Aegean seas, picking up moisture and dropping it on the growing trees.

William asks…

What are some good places to have lunch at for a bachelorette party in Atlanta (surrounding areas) ?

I’m having a bachelorette party and want to take my ladies out to lunch but I don’t know where to go.
No male revues thank you I want to go out to eat

Tea Search Questions answers:

Mary Macs? Horseradish Grill? If you want old fashioned French, Le Petit Auberge.

This probably isn’t in your area, but there’s a lovely tea house in Woodstock, Tea Leaves and Thyme that serves a nice lunch, and it’s a really pretty venue. If Marietta is an option, there’s a farm-to-table restaurant that Alton Brown has been known to go to: Chicken and The Egg. Pretty place, and a good lunch.
